INSIDER TIPS FOR PUTTING TOGETHER YOUR PROPOSAL

GENERAL

  • DO NOT bind the proposal in any way: NO staples, NO binders and NO brads. Use paper clips or fold-back binder clips to hold papers together.
  • DO NOT place materials in plastic sleeves.
  • Use only regular-weight paper. DO NOT use card stock.
  • Label everything with your project title: demo reels (both the case AND the CD/DVD inside), actor head shots, storyboards, etc.
  • Please print neatly or type when filling out the application form. If we cannot read the participant names, budget or your contact information, we cannot properly process your application.
  • Please also include the synopsis and treatment in English if you’re submitting your proposal in French. Remember, Bravo! is an English-language station, so the project must be understandable to the viewers.
  • When corresponding with us ALWAYS mention the title of your project. We deal with hundreds of applications on a daily basis, so your name doesn’t always immediately bring your project to the front of our minds.
  • You do not need to be attached to a production company in order to apply. Individuals, production companies, and arts organisations are all welcome to submit projects for consideration.
  • Please keep a copy of your completed application. DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS. While we do try to return all materials to the applicant, we can not be responsible for items that go missing.

BUDGET

  • To get your total budget: add up the Cash column, add up the Donated column and then add the two together. This is your Total Budget figure. The amount you request cannot be more than 50% of your total budget; and the maximum amount you can ask for is $25,000. For example, if your total budget is $24,000 the maximum you can ask for is $12,000 (50%). Or, if your total budget is $89,000, the maximum you can ask for is $25,000 (the maximum grant awarded).
  • When filling out the Project Financing Sources area, you do not include the amount you are requesting from Bravo!FACT. In addition, do not include donations/cash deferrals from the Donated column. This area is for other grants you have applied for (from the NFB, for example) or broadcast second-window commitments or private investment funding (again, this cannot include donations/deferrals).

DEMO REELS

  • DO NOT submit demos or materials in QuickTime format, CD-ROMS or as Internet addresses.
  • We accept submissions on VHS and DVD. If submitting material on DVD, it should contain a menu, and only the clip(s) you want us to see—we cannot fast-forward on DVDs. VHS tapes should be cued to the desired clip for viewing.
  • Demo reels for proposal participants are required for whichever of the following concern your project. On VHS/DVD: producer, director, lead actors, lead dancers, choreographer, animators. On CD: composer, musicians, narrator. Key cast and crew must be attached to the project when you apply.
  • If the subject is a visual artist, include visual samples of their work, either photographs, color copies of photos or images on DVD.
  • Ensure the DVD plays on something other than the computer it was burned on. We often receive DVDs that won’t play in our machines.
  • Remove any shrink-wrap packaging from new CDs (label both case and CD with project title and track number).

RIGHTS

  • If you’re using a cover song we need the mechanical and synchronization rights in perpetuity. These MUST be included in order for your application to be processed. If the song is in the public domain, please include paperwork confirming this. You do not have to pay for the rights in advance, but must submit to us paperwork between you and the rights holder indicating the rights are available to you as required and for a sum that will fit your budget.
  • If you’re adapting a short story that’s been published, we need a copy of the rights you have obtained giving you permission to use the story for your project.

THE PROPOSAL

  • Grants are for new projects not yet in production. We also do not fund completed works.
  • We do not award grants to documentaries, i.e., if your subject is a blues musician, a straight-ahead shoot of the musician performing would not be funded by Bravo!FACT. We require narrative, creative proposals.
  • The maximum running-time is six minutes or less. This is NON-NEGOTIABLE. This maximum is for the film itself only; running credits may run longer but will NOT be broadcast with the short. You must adhere to the running time in your contract.
  • The project must be considered Canadian Content according to the guidelines set out by the CRTC. For more information and to find out if your project qualifies, please visit www.crtc.gc.ca.
  • For the technical treatment, please provide a description of the technical aspects of your project - what kind of film/camera you will be using and why, any lighting or special effects or animation techniques you will be using, etc. The technical treatment should be about one paragraph to one page long, depending on the complexity of your project.
  • Only completed applications with all appropriate supplementary material will be accepted.  Bravo!FACT reserves the right to return any incomplete applications.
  • Occasionally, due to time constraints, the Bravo!FACT jury will be unable to review all applications on the day of a board meeting.  If this happens the applications that have not been reviewed will be reviewed at the next jury meeting.
  • Bravo!FACT awards cover up to 50% of a project’s total cost.  The amounts vary from several hundred dollars to a maximum of $25,000. Please note that the full amount requested in an application is not always the amount that is awarded.

THE AWARD

  • Changes to a project that has been awarded a grant (including, but not limited to) production team, performers, running time and concept must first be approved by Bravo!FACT.
  • Bravo!FACT reserves the right to withdraw the offer of the award if changes are made to a proposal after receiving a grant (including, but not limited to) changes in the production team, performers, running time or concept.
  • The copyright is retained by the awardee, while Bravo! and its affiliated and related services receive non-exclusive broadcast and non broadcast rights.
